Label & code inspection

Label inspection and date code verification on every pack

Industrial AI Vision checks that every pack carries the right label, in the right place, with a legible and correct date and batch code.

Updated October 2026 · 3D simulation, illustrative

Industrial AI Vision, our vision inspection system, is a label inspection system for New Zealand production lines. Using AI machine vision, it checks every pack for the correct label for the product, label position and condition, a date, batch or lot code that is present, legible and correct for the run, and a readable barcode. Non-conforming packs are removed by your existing reject equipment, and every result is recorded with its image.

Wrong labels stopped

The wrong artwork, variant or allergen label caught before it reaches a customer.

Codes you can trust

Every date and batch code confirmed present, legible and correct for the run.

Image-backed records

A photo and result for every pack, ready for audits and customer queries.

What it checks

Every label, code and mark on the pack

  1. 01

    Label presence and position

    • Label present
    • Position and skew
    • Wrinkles, tears and lifted edges
  2. 02

    Right label for the product

    • Artwork and variant match
    • Allergen and ingredient panel
    • Front and back label pairing
  3. 03

    Date and batch codes

    • Best-before and use-by dates
    • Batch and lot codes
    • Print quality and legibility
  4. 04

    Barcodes and case labels

    • Barcode readability
    • QR and 2D codes
    • Case and shipper labels
Date code verification

Date and batch codes read, checked and recorded

Optical character recognition reads each printed code and compares it with the code expected for the run.

  • Present: on every pack, in the right place
  • Legible: no smudged, faint or broken characters
  • Correct: matches the date, batch and lot for the run
  • Recorded: a photo of each code, kept with the run

Changeovers

The right label from the first pack of every run

  1. 01

    Settings per product

Label artwork, variant, allergen panel and code format are stored for each product you run.

  2. 02

    Leftover labels caught

A roll from the previous run or an old date code is flagged on the first packs, before a whole run is affected.

  3. 03

    New products added

New labels are trained in the Industrial AI Vision Lab (VLab) and agreed with your quality team before production. How custom models are trained.

Allergens

Allergen and wrong-pack checks

Undeclared allergens are the main reason for food recalls in Australia: 35 of the 92 recalls FSANZ coordinated in 2025. From 2021 to 2025, the most common cause of allergen recalls was a packaging error, such as product packed into the wrong packaging. FSANZ recall statistics.

  • Allergen panel: the approved version, with its bold “Contains” statement
  • Current artwork: old versions from before a recipe change are flagged

The vision system checks each pack against the approved artwork for the run. Whether the declaration matches the recipe stays with your quality team.

Integration

Integrated with your labelling line

Industrial AI Vision connects with your line’s control systems, reject equipment, operator displays and data platforms. How plant integration works.

  1. 01

    Reject and divert

Mislabelled and miscoded packs are removed by the reject and divert equipment already on your line.

  2. 02

    Operator alerts

Repeated faults, such as a coder running faint, are raised on your existing screens so the cause is fixed quickly.

  3. 03

    Quality records

Results by line, shift, product and batch, with an image of every label and code for audits and customer queries.

Works alongside your coders and scanners

Inkjet, laser and thermal transfer coders and barcode scanners stay in place. The vision system adds the visual checks they can’t make, alongside any existing machine vision system. Computer vision vs machine vision.

Product-specific models

Each model is trained in the Vision Lab on your labels and codes. For caps, seals and cartons, see packaging inspection; for food lines, food and beverage inspection; for finished pallets, pallet and dispatch verification.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does the system know which label should be on the pack?
Each product has its own settings for label artwork, variant, allergen panel and code format. Settings switch at changeover through a line signal or a confirmation on the operator screen, and the first packs of each run are checked against them.
Can it read date and batch codes?
Yes. Optical character recognition (OCR) reads printed best-before, use-by, batch and lot codes and compares them with the code expected for the run. Missing, smudged, faint or incorrect codes are flagged with a photo.
Does it replace our coder or barcode scanners?
No. Your printers, coders and barcode scanners stay in place. Industrial AI Vision adds the visual checks they can’t make, such as label position, artwork match and print legibility, and confirms what the coder printed.
Will it work with our existing reject system?
Yes. Industrial AI Vision signals your existing reject and divert equipment through your line’s control system, so mislabelled or miscoded packs are removed by your existing equipment. Integration details are confirmed for each site. How plant integration works.
Do we need new cameras?
It depends on the application. We supply industrial cameras and lighting specified for label and code inspection, installed by arrangement, or integrate with your existing cameras where they’re suitable.
How is the system trained on our labels?
Each model is developed in the Industrial AI Vision Lab (VLab), our model-training environment, using images of your own labels, codes and real faults under your line’s lighting, and validated on your production data before go-live. How custom models are trained.
